New Work, Maxfield Parrish, New Directions-
April 6, 2008

I finished new pieces for both the upcoming Boston SoWa Art Walk on May 17 and May 18, 2008 (more info at www.sowaartwalk.com ) and also for a benefit for the Lexington Symphony in Mass More >

Technique

All paintings are acrylic on canvas. The surfaces are highly worked and have a weathered appearance. This results from a rather labor-intensive work process involving an electric sander, gel medium, Ajax, water, rubbing, and applying and removing many, many layers of paint. At the end of which a coat of gloss, acrylic polyurethane is applied.

End result is a very flat surface that resembles and feels somewhat like a glossy encaustic with considerable apparent depth.

I would also mention that these photos do not do the pieces justice. They really shimmer and have a depth and color that does not translate to these pages. If you are within my locale and would like to see them, please contact me amd I can arrange to meet with you.

All pieces are very reasonably priced.

Please Note: If you would like to be notified when new pieces become available, please send me an email and I will contact you at that time.

Available works and ones in the show are noted below title. Regardless of status, if there are particular works you are interested in please contact me.

Statement

What I am trying to convey in my work is a sense of mystery, loss, beauty, a general sense of incomprehension and a feeling of presence. I try to do this from a non-sentimental perspective and within a framework that is for the most part neither entirely abstraction nor figuration.

Influences/inspirations

I feel engaged within the history of art ranging from prehistoric to contemporary.

Some of the influences and inspirations I particularly feel an immediacy to are Sally Mann, Roger Ballen, Denis Johnson, Caravaggio, Joseph Bueys, bad art, outsider art, Constable, Ornette Coleman, Moroccan art/design , Andy Kauffman, Tokyo street fashion, Cedell Davis, Titian, Matthew Barney, Bruce Nauman, J.M.W. Turner, Atget, Renaissance art, imagery derived from Catholicism, Mozart, Arvo Part, Cormac McCarthy, Flannery O'Connor, The Children's Crusade, Giotto, Neo Rauch and more.

Music

I've been doing some music lately that is available here for free download. Guitar-based, layered, computer manipulated, kind of noisey, improvised. 9/10/06

Three mp3 examples (all around 2 minutes long):
Solo.mp3 , metal.mp3 , new.mp3
If you would like a free cd of these and more, please contact me and let me know.

Please note...

  • Solo show at Case GallerySculpture
I used to do a lot of sculpture 10 years or so ago. I didn't paint at all at that time. I was asked for some examples recently so I put two pages together of examples.

  • The Children's Crusade

The Children's Crusade is a mysterious event that took place around 1212, when, according to scattered comments in chronicles, thousands of children undertook to free the Holy Land.

  • "The Kindness of Strangers: The Abandonment of Children in Western Europe from Late Antiquity to the Renaissance" by Dr. John Boswell.

The rates of abandonment are astounding. For example, the overall rate of child abandonment in the 1st - 3rd centuries is seen as being in the area of 20-40 percent of all live births resulted in the child being abandoned. And these rates are typical for the timeframe discussed in the book.
